Below are the events that have been held to foster more reading by our students.  These events are organized by the librarian and reading specialists in each K-3 school.

BUSHKILL ELEMENTARY SCHOOLWIDE READ-IN

LOWER NAZARETH ELEMENTARY SCHOOLWIDE READ-IN

FLOYD R. SHAFER ELEMENTARY SCHOOLWIDE READ-IN

Students bring a blanket or beach towel along with a favorite book or books.  Students and staff sit in the hallways reading and sharing their favorite book.  Some sit silently and read.  Others read to each other.   There were two schoolwide read-ins.  One was in the fall to kick off the reading challenge and another was in February/March to celebrate the final push to 100 books in 100 days!

LOWER NAZARETH ELEMENTARY STUDENTS WHO READ 100 BOOKS

The reading challenge this year was called "I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Reading!  Students were challenged to read 100 books by the 100th day of school.  When the student reached their goal of 100 books, a scoop with your name on it was put in their classroom's cone.  The following slideshows show the kids who reached 100 books posing with their classroom ice cream cone.

RAISE THE ROOF FOR READING

In the fall near the start of school, LNES had a "Raise the Roof for Reading" one evening at the school.  Staff read from their favorite books on the top of LNES while students and their families listened below.  This was LNES kick-off to the reading challenge to 100 books in 100 days.  After the staff was finished, they came down and joined the families who brought their own books to read on the lawn for a great reading time together.  This event won a 2015 Excellence in Education Award for LNES.

Coach Ryan Sloth visited all three K-3 schools to share his story of how he became an author; how he comes up with ideas for new books; and how kids can get to be authors too.  It was a great time in each building.  Afterwards he signed books for students.  Check out his website for more information!
